"A witty, well-written guide to Visual Basic 6.0." I have a stack of Visual Basic books to wade through, and I chose this one because, well, I love Wally Wang. We go way back, back to obscure computer magazines and that one night in Vegas when we found $600 (plus an unknown amount of a certain South American currency) in our hotel room. But that's a story for another day. I love the way Wally (known as Wallace on the cover because "Wally Wang" just doesn't translate well in England) writes. He can certainly make a dull subject bright. There is no denying his humor in the figures and throughout the text and examples. The book is massively entertaining. But the question is, does it teach Visual Basic well? And therein lies the rub, not only in this but also with all Visual Basic books. Unlike traditional programming languages, Visual Basic is both a language and a product. So, the question is, which do you talk about first, creating a Visual Basic program or using the Visual Basic interface? Wally opts for the interface first, which he handles well. Alas, my goal in learning any new programming language is to write the first program. In this book, that doesn't happen until chapter 4. Ouch. Happily, though, once the book gets going, there's no stopping it--it is packed. The pace is swift, and the steps outlining each project are thick. This may be too much for some beginners, but it sated my appetite for relearning this programming language. (My first books were on GW Basic way back in the mid-1800s.)

I bought this book for my husband. Computers are his department in our house. He likes to learning new things about computers. He tries many different operating systems, lots of different software, and uses multiple programming formats. I do know my husband has used Visual Basic for some time and does keep going back to it frequently. He has other Visual Basic books from the "for dummies" line and he does like them. When he's looking for information, this line of books is usually his first and favorite source.

This is a good book. I inherited a program written in VB6 and needed to get to know how it worked. This is a beginning book so it was not helpful once I got beyond the basics. The programmer who wrote the program was really deep so there were many advanced concepts not in the book. A beginner would like this book.

The book is fine. I didn't have the patience to walk through step by step. It worked ok as a reference, but it's really intended to teach programming start to finish with exercises that build on each other.

I bought this book and quickly discovered that Visual Book 6 is no longer the latest tool for VB programming. Microsoft has introduced Visual Basic 2005--which you can download free from Microsoft.Consequently, any book on VB6 is really a waste of your time. You would just end up converting your VB6 code to MS VB 2005. Why waste time learning old commands? Go right to the latest.If you want a great book on MS VB 2005 try Michael Halvorson Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Step by Step.

As someone who has worked for this company, it is not uncommon for the stockers to remove media from the book thinking it is not included, which happened in this case. The book itself is easly a 4-5 star i gave 2 to reflect how dissappointed i was not getting the cd that was to be included.

About the Author

Danica G. Hays, PhD, LPC, NCC, is Associate Professor of Counseling and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University. Her research interests include qualitative methodology, assessment and diagnosis, trauma and gender issues, and multicultural and social justice concerns in counselor preparation and community mental health. She has published numerous articles and book chapters and has coauthored or coedited three previous books. Dr. Hays is the Founding Editor of the journal Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award, Outstanding Counselor Educator Advocacy Award, and Glen E. Hubele National Graduate Student Award from the American Counseling Association, as well as the Patricia B. Elmore Excellence in Measurement and Evaluation Award and President’s Special Merit Award from the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education.
 

Anneliese A. Singh, PhD, LPC, is Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Education and Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services at the University of Georgia. Her clinical, research, and advocacy interests include LGBT youth, Asian American/Pacific Islander counseling and psychology, multicultural counseling and social justice training, qualitative methodology with historically marginalized groups (e.g., people of color, LGBT individuals, immigrants), and feminist empowerment interventions with survivors of trauma. Dr. Singh is passionate about helping students and early-career professionals to develop their academic writing skills and to learn to develop their own voices. She has conducted numerous seminars and workshops on academic writing at the graduate level, in addition to teaching writing courses at the doctoral level. The recipient of numerous awards for her scholarship, Dr. Singh is a prolific writer, with more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and other professional publications. Her books include Qualitative Inquiry in Clinical and Educational Settings (coauthored with Danica G. Hays) and Successful Academic Writing: A Complete Guide for Social and Behavioral Scientists (coauthored with Lauren Lukkarila).
