About the Author

David Croteau taught about the sociology of media as an Associate Professor (retired) in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the author of Politics and the Class Divide: Working People and the Middle-Class Left and co-author, with William Hoynes, of Experience Sociology.

William Hoynes is Professor of Sociology and former Director of the Media Studies Program at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he teaches courses on media, culture, and social theory. He is the author of Public Television for Sale: Media, the Market, and the Public Sphere and co-author, with David Croteau, of Experience Sociology.

Notes are an important tool for learning. We don’t take notes just to record a few facts so we can review them later. Learning happens as we take notes. Taking notes the right way leads to good study practices, better performance on exams, and long-term retention of information.

“It comes naturally.” FALSE. Note taking is not obvious or intuitive. Research has shown that students fail to capture 40% of the main points in a typical lecture. First-year students capture only 11%. In some studies, even the best note takers seem to record less than 75% of the important information. People think they take good notes until they’re told they don’t. Few of us have consciously thought about how we take notes (let alone how to improve the quality of them). We often reproduce the lecturer’s phrases verbatim. We don’t save time by systematic use of abbreviations. We fail to become a “good psychologist” of our lecturer. We fail to pick up his enthusiasm. We fail to interpret the tone of his voice. We fail to read his body language. And the result is that we fail to take good notes.

“Anyway, no one taught me how to take notes in school or in college.” TRUE. Educators believe that students are able to assess the quality of their notes and follow good practices. However, studies have shown the exact opposite. The fact that there isn’t a course in college dedicated to the art of taking notes (or learning in general) makes students believe that this is a natural skill that they can perfect with practice over the course of their studies.

In this book, you may be surprised to learn that I don’t make any references to different types of note-taking systems like those that other books do. The reason is that it’s the practices behind the note taking that matter most. For example, you should not copy the lecturer’s phrases word for word, but generate the main points in your own words. I encourage students to use the Cornell note-taking system because it utilizes most of the principles of effective note taking. No matter which note-taking system you decide to follow, the cognitive effort you will have to expend is equally high.

I needed this book for my recertification class and it came with everything (book and mini booklet). You can now use it during the written test for your certification which is nice just in case you forgot a fact. It's crazy how the AHA just changes a couple things every edition and you have to buy a completely different set of supplies. When are we ever going to get it right where we just have a technique that works and doesn't have to be changed every couple years for book sales?

Great book by The American Heart Association. Everything very well explained and very clearly. It does take sometime to go through the contents and organize the info. It brings labels that you place in every session for easy finding as you review the materials.

I also signed up for acts-algorithms.com, which has interactive scenarios and many practice quizzes. The combination of this reference book and the online tests helped me get 100% on my written tests!

I called AHA to see how much they offer it and it was double.This book also included the small cards that AHA offers that is $19.95, the algorithms so no need to buy separate. The ACLS book saved my Cardiology grade because the Pearson Paramedic textbooks have conflicting information that does not follow either 2010 or 2015 AHA standards. After mastering the course and earning my ACLS certificate, I carry the holdouts with me along with my pocket guide

What would reaching these objectives do for your children? First, it would insure their success and happiness. This does not mean they would have a life free of problems, but they would have the inner resources to deal with these problems effectively. Instead of becoming burdens to society, as so many are, they would be the lifters and the builders.

Parents would benefit equally. They would be spared the anxiety, worry and usual distress parents experience when children are problems. They would feel pride and satisfaction as they see their children mature inot honorable, happy adults. They would begin to enjoy the rewards of their many years of dedication and sacrifice. Their children's success would be their success. The father's kingdom would be his family; the mothers glory would be the happiness of her children.

A generation of excellent children would have a profound effect upon society. We would eliminate vice, corruption, violence and msot of our social problems. Our power to shape a child is profound. We can mold his character, instill a faith in God, build self-worth and almost insure his success and happiness. However, a child is not quite as pliable as a piece of clay. He is born with inherent traits.
