About the Author
Joseph Heller was born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. He served as a bombardier in the Second World War and then attended New York University, Columbia and Oxford University, the last on a Fullbright scholarship. He taught for two years at Pennsylvania State University, before returning to New York, where he began a successful career in the advertising departments of Time, Look and McCall's magazines. It was during this time that he had the idea for Catch-22. Working on the novel in spare moments and evenings at home, it took him eight years to complete and was first published in 1961. His second novel, Something Happened was published in 1974, Good As Gold in 1979 and Closing Time in 1994. He is also the author of the play 'We Bombed in New Haven'. Joseph Heller died in 1999.

About the Author
Rev. Mark Bosco, S.J., holds joint appointments in the Departments of English and Theology at Loyola University Chicago. He received his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Theology and Literature from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. Dr. Bosco s teaching and research interests lie in the intersection between theological discourse and literary texts, especially those of the British and American Catholic Literary Revival of the twentieth century. He is the author of two books, including most recently Graham Greene s Catholic Imagination (Oxford University Press, 2005).

Dr. Kimberly Rae Connor is Associate Professor in the College of Professional Studies at the University of San Francisco. She received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia. Dr. Connor s academic interests focus on African American religious life and cultural production. She is the author of three books, including most recently Imagining Grace: Liberating Theologies in the Slave Narrative Tradition (University of Illinois Press, 2000).

Shizuka Kusano's work has been featured many times in women's magazine and she can be seen on two nationwide TV programs, one of which is broadcast on the educational channel NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). She teaches at more than five different places, including the Tokyo American Club. She had been part of at least 30 major exhibitions in the last 5 years, and has had one solo show. Kusano is the author of five books in Japanese; this is her first in English.
