I had actually purchased this book before it was required in a class I was attending at California State University of Sacramento taught by an amazing teacher and social entrepreneurship guru Dr. Lani Frazier.The Blue Sweater: Bridging the gap between rich and poor in an interconnected world by Jacqueline Novogratz is about the many issues we face around the world with the focus starting in Africa. Poverty, disease and death are the major issues that the world deals with everyday. Through the eyes of Novogratz, her experiences that she has encountered make you want to help in any way possible. She has been able to help many people with housing and teaching them how to receive financial support in order to create new business to have a better life without all the struggles.This life changing experience she lives through was the beginning of micro-financing and the Acumen Fund. Novogratz's shared many stories about the struggles of the people in Africa and goes on to remind us all not to give up hope, that we will all still make mistakes and to learn from all this.As a high school teacher working in a low-socioeconomic area, I do hear stories of the struggles of families here in the San Joaquin area. When they ask what I think, I share some of the stories that Novogratz has mentioned in her book.Some very interesting and helpful information that goes along with this book is that the Acumen Fund recommends using a teaching guide. I have shared this book and the teaching guide with the English department and recommended that they look into implementing this into some of their reading assignments or to pass on to other the classes.I do recommend this book to everyone
I loved this book, despite the fact that it was completely different than what I expected. It challenged me intellectually, although I couldn’t hold a candle to the author. It’s a great read and I’d challenge anyone to read it.
Great book! I am so happy my professor assigned this before I attempt to create my social enterprise. Gave me so much insight and the author has great flow throughout the book to keep me reading.
